Dante e la Colonna Traiana

Abstract

Nella Divina Commedia di Dante vi è un solo caso nel quale vengano descritte delle opere d’arte, e cioè i bassorilievi marmorei con atti di umiltà o di superbia punita che si trovano agli inizi del Purgatorio. In modo particolare ha attirato l’attenzione degli studiosi l’episodio detto della “Giustizia di Traiano”, che ha fatto pensare che il Poeta si sia ispirato non solo alla leggenda medievale dell’imperatore pagano riportato in vita dalle preghiere del Papa Gregorio Magno e da lui convertito al Cristianesimo, ma anche che Dante abbia utilizzato una fonte iconografica antica, forse uno dei numerosi rilievi traianei al suo tempo ancora visibili a Roma. Questo articolo tenta di dimostrare che Dante sia stato ispirato dalla conoscenza diretta della Colonna Traiana, forse da lui conosciuta quando, nel 1300, fece parte dell’ambasceria fiorentina presso il papa Bonifacio VIII.

In Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy there is only a case in which artworks seen by the Poet in his journey through the three Realms of Afterlife are recorded. Precisely, it is the description of the marble bas-reliefs containing acts of humility or punished pride that he saw at the beginning of Purgatory. In particular, the episode known as the “Justice of Trajan” has attracted the attention of scholars, and it has led some of them to think that the Poet was inspired not only by the medieval legend of the pagan emperor brought back to life by the prayers of Pope Gregory the Great and converted by him to Christianity, but also that Dante followed an ancient iconographic source, perhaps one of the many Trajan’s reliefs still visible in Rome in his time. This paper attempts to demonstrate that this description may be inspired by Dante’s direct knowledge of the Trajan Column, which he may have seen in the year 1300, when he was part of the Florentine embassy to Pope Bonifacius VIII.
